There is a lot to love about this show; the cast are strong, and the onstage band who interact in the main diner setting is a fun touch.

Things | Ross NobleFor my money, Ross Noble has the funniest show at the festival this year. As anyone who is familiar with the mad geordie waffler will know, he likes to stand on stage, take the first thing he sees and launch into a long stream of hilarious free-association. Or, as he puts it himself, 'Half thought through nonsense spews out of my brain and comes out of my mouth in a parade of utter bollocks. And it makes people happy.'

Well indeed.

No sooner had Noble bounced onto the stage and got halfway through saying 'good evening', he was distracted by someone with their feet up in the front row and another person holding a 6-month-old baby. 45 minutes later, an audience with split sides and tears rolling down their faces were still waiting for him to complete his opening sentence.

It's simply mindblowing how many threads Ross Noble can keep going at once, coming back to them unexpectedly and wildly inventing new ones as he goes along. It's like watching the entire series of LOST in compressed form, except Noble always finds a way to bring it all back together.

Every show is different, but there are no doubt stories he likes to get to each time if he can. He told us some tales of his trip to Afghanistan - the thought of Ross Noble anywhere near a military zone is frankly unsettling. He also shared a story (eventually) about his human baby child of unspecified age which involved 3D goggles, a wooden spoon, an absence of clothes and a sense of purpose. For me this was the highlight of the show because it captured what Ross Noble loves about life and where the well of his comedy springs from - total freedom of mind.

I'd say Ross Noble weaves a magnificent tapestry of pure comedy gold, if he didn't already say so himself to a heckler. Brilliant stuff and food for the soul. I laughed so much it hurt.
